It is wonderful too see the world reach out for japan.
I am sure everyone has been informed by now, but here is a quick recap just in case:
March 11 was a tragic day for Japan after a disastrous 8.9-magnitude earthquake shattered the eastern coast and resulted in a series of tsunamis that washed away homes, cars, and caused damage of catastrophic proportions
There are still threats such as series of aftershocks and a risk of a nuclear plant meltdown... but for now all efforts should be focused on relief for the victims.
First priorities have gone towards rescuing, and locating people, but I think that it is also important that we are all aware of the animals caught in this crises. Although it is true most have a sense of how to react before, and during natural disasters, we cant necassarly assume this automatically ensures their safety. The organizations below specifically help with animal rescue efforts in the affected areas.World vets is a non-government organization (NGO) providing veterinary aid around the globe in collaboration with animal advocacy groups, foreign governments, US and foreign military groups and veterinary professionals abroad. They are getting supplies and a first responder team ready to deploy to Japan.

World Vets Facebook The
American Humane Association’s Red Star Animal Emergency Services Team is monitoring the situation closely and is reaching out to its international partners in order to provide a joint response to this global emergency.
The National Disaster Search Dog Foundation is deploying six canine disaster search teams to assist with the rescues. The task force will be composed of approximately 72 personnel, including urban search and rescue dogs, and some 75 tons of rescue equipment.
The Animal Refuge Kansai is an organization in Kansai, Japan, that is preparing for a huge influx of animals from the disaster areas.
PETA- funds gives the means to respond to all sorts of disasters, from fires to floods to hurricanes. It also helps us provide crucial information on how to safeguard animals before disaster strikes and allows vital assistance.
PETA offers a
tip sheet on how to prepare for any type of natural disaster that may arise
the
SPCA INTERNATIONAL emergency team is carefully monitoring the earthquake in Japan and assessing how they can best help both animals and humans in the aftermath.
Japan Earthquake Animal Rescue and Support is a collaboration of 3 No-Kill animal welfare organizations in Japan;
HEART TOKUSHIMA,
Animal Friends Niigata, and
Japan Cat Network --------
Also, for those who know of Japans
Cat Island. Not much has been said. Sadly, it is believed that the island became fully submerged during the tsunami.
EDITJust got this from wold vets facebook:</b>
From a commenter on The Conscious Cat:
I have a friend in Japan who managed to get in touch with people who knew about Tashirojima people and cats are said to be okay, but there was a lot of building damage and they need bare necessities for humans and cat food
The Japanese organizations said they couldnt help at the moment (my friend was very frustrated) and hes checking for some other foreign organisations which maybe could help. He also found out that a Japanese defence forces helicopter landed there this afternoon. So thats hopeful. Lots of volunteers are going to be needed there to help rebuild the island.
